A Blast (or Post) From the Past

I thought to lighten things up a little, I'd repost one of the earliest entries on this blog. Ah, remember when we were all so young and innocent?? Enjoy:

November 17, 2005

I was talking to Mom'o'us tonight about the joys of bacon -- telling her about your friend's blog where she said "If I was a vegan, I'd still eat bacon." (I almost wrote, "If I was a bacon..." WA HA HA!!!) Anyway, so I was sharing with Mom the first time I had an egg salad with bacon sandwich. Yummm!!!! I'll set the scene. It was probably 6 years ago (did I tell you this? Oh well.) and I was working a temp job at GE Insurance where they had a giant cafeteria. So the person in front of me at the sandwich station orders an egg salad with bacon sandwich. My eyes widen at the thought. I'd never heard of such a magnificent idea! But of course, it makes sense -- bacon and eggs. But on a sandwich? So I quickly ordered the same thing and hurried to my table (I'm glad I was by myself this day, preventing anyone I knew from witnessing my total sandwich gooniness!) Sigh. It was as good as I had hoped. Mmmmm. I had to keep myself from getting the cholesteral-busting meal every single day! I actually haven't had one in a long time as its a bit labor intensive when someone isn't preparing it for you. But it was definitely a red-letter day.

"Oh no! Not the long orchestrion again!"

Well, if we're talkin' BACON, let it be known that I have, singlemouthedly, devoured a whole pound of bacon in one sitting. I should make it clear that in my mind, it was really only about a hundredth of a pound, because we all know that once cooked, bacon really doesn't have any weight..right? YES, MIKE, THAT'S RIGHT!
Oh, and it wasn't really at one "sitting", because we also all know that if you are the cooker of the bacon, then you must sample each batch to make sure it is edible for everyone else, right? YES, MIKE..YOU ARE RIGHT AGAIN!
Finally, by the time all the bacon is cooked, we all know that there are only a few pieces left, and it would be a tease to tell anyone that there are four pieces of bacon left if anyone wants them... so the only humane thing to do is to eat those final few pieces...right? YES, MIKE...HOW RIGHT YOU ARE!
Therefore, as gluttonous as it might sound, eating a pound of bacon is, well...AMERICAN! And I'm Damn proud to be an American! I will continue to eat my pound of bacon in support of this great country of ours, and think we all should do the same, right? YES, MIKE!

boy, could I go for a pound of bacon right about now!

Oh. My. God. Now I am crying I am laughing so hard! I couldn't agree with you more, Michael!! You are the greatest, most patriotic American I've ever known! I plan to emulate your American behavior and go consume a pound of bacon as soon as possible!!

Since we're talkin' BACON, can any of you bacon lovers share your cooking methods with me?
During my last "pounding", I used 2 paper towels, then 6 pieces of bacon, 2 more paper towels, 6 more bacon, 2 papertowels, 6 bacon, 2 paper towels... and n uked the whole thing at once for 10 minutes!
The result?
Crispy, weightless bacon and a ton of fat saturated paper towels.
In this scenerio, I got 2 pieces of toast, lightly buttered, crammed all the bacon between the slices, and devoured it! Oh, be sure to hav a plate under your mouth to eat all th stray crumbs!
What's your cooking method?
Laura? You are the chef...share the secrets!

Wow, I feel as though I'm in the presence of a bacon master! I'm intriqued by your microwave effort. I just stick them in a pan and let them sizzle away. I did try a baking method recently (Ina Garten of the Food Netwook says it reduces the bacon smell that stays in the house long after the bacon is gone.) where you put the bacon on the broiler pan and put it in a 425 degree oven for 10 minutes. I found it needed more time and there was still quite a bacony smell.

I also like the simplicity of your bacon sandwich and how your toast is buttered (because a pound of bacon doesn't have enough fat!!!)

I use the electric griddle. I personally wish that the bacon smell would permeate my house forever. I've heard that the microwave is effective, but I've never tried it.

I wonder how long we can talk about bacon? Hell, we could probably have a whole blog about the joys of bacon!!

I know I will give away my age here, but I remember when McDonalds came out with the egg McMuffin...and those commercials that kept mentioning "..and a slice of CANADIAN BACON" I remember my bacon antenna picking up on it, and thinking, "boy, I bet CANADIAN BACON is even better than our AMERICAN bacon" So, the next time Mom was driving us kids past a McDonalds before 11am (the cut off time for breakfast food), I begged her to pull in and get one of those Egg McMuffins! So, in we went, bought Egg McMuffins, sat at a table...my mouth watering in anticipation of BACON....not just any bacon...but CANADIAN BACON!!!! I quickly opened the yellow wrapper...took as big a bite as a kid can...and ....
HAM! FRIGGIN' HAM! THIS ISN'T BACON! WHAT A RIP OFF. Like I said in an earlier blog...eating REAL bacon is just AMERICAN! We should gather up all our left over Christmas and Easter hams, send them up to Canada, put on commercials for AMERICAN BACON...and make those Dudley Dorights eat our old HAM!

...ok, I feel better now.

I think Canadian bacon is more a cross between pork roll and ham. O mighty pork roll... You could do a whole blog post about pork roll......

Um, I think YOU can do a whole post about pork roll. Its not really my thing.

What would be a good Portmanteau (see my blog on this word) for a pork roll/ham mix?
